City of Monterey, Principal Planner
The position of Principal Planner is a full-time position that serves as an integral role in the Division of Planning, Engineering, and Environmental Compliance for reviewing current planning applications and stewarding advanced planning work program items. The Division includes a diverse team of professionals in planning, engineering, project management, transportation, environmental compliance, housing, water use, property management, historic preservation, sustainability, and architectural disciplines serving six (6) individual boards/commissions including the City Council. The position offers a unique opportunity for an individual interested in a variety of topics including progressive mixed-use redevelopment in a culturally-significant community.
Candidates who successfully complete all phases of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list is active for 12-months and may be used to fill additional positions including lower-level positions determined to have similar duties and requirements such as Senior Planner. Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Six years of progressively responsible professional planning experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
Education: Completion of advance education, equivalent to graduation from college, with a degree in public planning, architecture, economics, public administration, or a related field.
