]]>The SF Urban Film Fest proudly presents its 10th anniversary film festival, Rooted Resurgence, April 15-21, 2024. The week-long festival events will take place in person throughout San Francisco across various venues, including the Tenderloin Museum, SF Port’s headquarters at Pier 1, and the newly reopened The STUD, the first worker-owned cooperative nightclub in the US.
The highlight this season is a celebration on opening night April 15th at OASIS nightclub, itself embodying the festival theme of Rooted Resurgence. From its start as a community pool in the 80’s, to its contemporary moment as a staple in San Francisco’s drag nightclub scene, Oasis has always stayed rooted in community throughout its many transformations.
The Rooted Resurgence festival programs aim to spark conversations about San Francisco’s burgeoning resurgence with an emphasis on community and equity. “Our 10th anniversary festival aims to uplift the folks who constantly rework and regenerate social and physical infrastructure with possibility and positivity,” says Fay Darmawi, SF Urban Film Fest’s Founder and Executive Director. As with each festival, the SF Urban Film Fest centers critical storytelling, collective creative production, and the seeding of solutions toward just and equitable cities.
To reserve your ticket, donate, or find more information, please visit the 2024 festival website. Tickets are on a sliding scale except for the opening night party which is $20 per ticket. However, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

]]>Over 25 members of the Northern Section Board gathered for our annual retreat on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the very hospitable offices of WSP in downtown San Francisco. The purpose of the Retreat was to get to know each other better, to recap our successes from the prior year, and, most importantly, to plan for member services and events in 2024!
Director Michael Cass kicked off the meeting with a Land Acknowledgement statement. We then tucked in a healthy breakfast of bagels, donuts, and coffee, and a very fun “Planner’s Punch” icebreaker compiled by Ryan Adamson and Afshan Hamid, AICP. For this, everyone introduced themselves and drew a unique and thought-provoking question from a large punch bowl. My question was “Do You Believe in Ghosts?” Not a question I’ve often been asked!
Next, Michael Cass and Treasurer Justin Meek, AICP presented a budget for 2024. Our prior years’ spending has been reduced due to pandemic impacts, so the new year budget recognized the need to ramp-up our programming and to reflect the increased costs of doing business.
Our POD breakout sessions followed, including the newly formed Young and Emerging Planners POD which has replaced the Membership Engagement POD. During this breakout we discussed our 2023 accomplishments and identified specific goals and actions for 2024. The POD groups reported out on the results of the breakout later in the day.
The Leadership portion of the meeting kicked off the Section’s Strategic Planning effort for 2024. Strategic Plan Committee Co-Chairs Afshan Hamid, AICP, and Jeff Bond, AICP, led the group in small group discussion on our accomplishments for the 9 Initiatives that were adopted in 2023. If you are interested in participating in the 2024 Strategic Planning Committee, please contact Co-Chairs Afshan Hamid, AICP, and Jeff Bond, AICP.
Following a delicious Peruvian lunch procured by Martin Reyes, AICP, PE, we played a bracingly competitive Bay Area Trivia game put together by Martin and Michael Wooley-Ousdahl, AICP, with the winning team earning prizes from Nikoniko Gifts, a very cool gift shop run by Martin’s partner.
We wrapped up the day with a discussion of the Chapter Conference for 2025 which will be hosted by the Northern Section. The call for volunteers for the Conference has been released and members are strongly encouraged to get involved!
Our 2024 Retreat was very productive and tremendous fun. Thanks are due to our dynamic retreat planning committee, which included Ryan Adamson, Afshan Hamid, Olivia Mendoza, Martin Reyes, and Michael Wooley-Ousdahl, along with Libby Tyler and Michael Cass. Thanks are especially due to Ryan Adamson and WSP for hosting us at their offices.

]]>The post Director’s Note appeared first on Northern California Section of the American Planning Association.
]]>Welcome to 2024, Northern Section! In my message to you at this same time last year, I wrote about how 2023 would be Northern Section’s Year of Transition as we emerged from our shared pandemic experience, enjoying the familiarity of re-engaging as we had in the past and welcoming new emerging ways of working and connecting. In 2024, we look forward to leaning into new opportunities to serve our members and our profession.
Last year marked the first full year we emerged from the pandemic, which was highlighted by a number of transitions in the Northern Section. This transition was kicked off by our “New Year, New Northern” event aboard the USS Potomac in Oakland. Notably, the Northern Section appointed 17 new Board Members, bringing innovation and energy to the Northern Section. We recruited a new Communications team, many of whom contributed to this issue of Northern News. As part of those changes, we also officially launched our new logo and website.
On the administrative front, we launched a multi-year effort to develop the Northern Section’s first strategic plan by adopting our Section initiatives. And we launched our new Sponsorship Program, which garnered immediate support from M-Group, Rhoades Planning Group, and Somos Group. All this was done while continuing to provide our expanded awards program, educational programming, and networking opportunities.
Looking ahead, the Northern Section has a number of exciting changes planned. As discussed above, the Northern Section Board will prepare and adopt our first Strategic Plan, developing a roadmap for our organization for years to come. We also will be fully immersed in planning the 2025 APA California Chapter Conference (see article on how you can get involved).
Our Board is excited to work for and with our members. As always, please reach out if you would like to get involved. Here’s to building our Northern Section together!
