Planning for Equity – What is the role of planners in promoting equity? During this time of racial reckoning in America and beyond, what can we do as planners to make sure our work contributes to equity? The APA adopted and published the Planning for Equity Policy Guide in May 2019. According to the policy guide “Planning for Equity means applying an equity lens- for just and fair inclusion into a society in which all can participate, prosper and reach their full potential- to everything planners do.” The planning profession has played a past and present role in perpetuating discriminatory practices against communities of color, LGBTQ communities, women, and persons with disabilities. As planners we need to be aware of this history and actively work to ensure we change course. During this hour we will review the policy guide, what it means to have “equity in all policies” and discuss how principles of equity can be applied in our daily practice. Elizabeth Burks AICP (LACO Associates) and Meghan Ryan (Humboldt County) will present.
