City of Menlo Park – Assistant/Associate Planner

The City of Menlo Park currently has an opportunity for an Assistant/Associate Planner to join the Community Development Department.

The Community Development Department works to ensure a sustainable and vibrant community that supports economic wellbeing and a high quality of life for Menlo Park’s residents, businesses, and visitors. It performs numerous vital core services that include long-range planning, current planning, and building permitting and inspection services. The department is supported by a staff of 31 and a total annual budget of $8.09 million.

The position will be filled by the City at the level consistent with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.

Under general supervision, the Assistant/Associate Planner performs professional planning work, including acting as the project planner for a variety of development applications by interacting with project applicants and other interested persons, conducting analysis, preparing staff reports, reviewing and preparing environmental documents, and presenting project(s) at Commission and Council meetings; assisting with long-range planning programs and projects; explaining and applying City ordinances, regulations and policies; addressing inquiries from the general public, and supporting other planning functions, special projects and activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Assistant Planner

  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in Planning or a closely related field. Possession of a Master’s Degree in Planning or closely related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Experience: One (1) year of full time, increasingly responsible technical work involving surveying, drafting and interpretation and application of ordinances and regulations.

Associate Planner

  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in Planning or a closely related field. Possession of a Master’s Degree in Planning or closely related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of full time, increasingly responsible full time professional planning work.

Both positions require a valid driver’s license.
