City of Newark – Senior Planner


The Senior Planner is an important member of the Community Development Department team, which includes Planning, Community Preservation (Code Enforcement) and Economic Development divisions. This position reports to the Deputy Community Development Director and is expected to exercise independent judgement with a moderate amount of oversight. The Senior Planner would be exposed to many different professional opportunities within the department and across divisions, such as major project entitlement review,  policy development and implementation, affordable housing projects and programs, administrative improvements, community outreach and communications, and leadership development.  This position will represent the City at meetings with public officials, regulatory bodies, the business community, policy and advisory boards, community groups, and the public.

The ideal candidate is seeking to implement, develop and grow their skills in an environment that provides ample professional opportunities across all functional areas within the Community Development Department. The ideal candidate will be an experienced entitlements project manager with a proven background of success based on complete staff work and thorough analysis of adopted codes, policy documents, and CEQA regulations. The ideal candidate will also have successfully led policy and program development efforts. This candidate wants the benefits of working within a small organization where staff is tasked with a wide variety of assignments and relies upon close working relationships with their colleagues. This Senior Planner should be comfortable taking well-reasoned risks and discussing and implementing new ideas and approaches to effective service delivery. Key qualities expressed by the ideal candidate include identifying opportunities, problem solving, developing options, taking action, making reasonable decisions, and having a sense of humor of their own. The Senior Planner shall have high standards for communication, particularly with respect to written reports, oral presentations, and interpersonal relationships.
