City of Santa Rosa – City Planner and City Planner Trainee

The City of Santa Rosa announces an opportunity to join a team of professionals performing highly responsible work in the field of urban planning and environmental analysis. 

A City Planner is the primary point of service for planning issues and meets face-to-face with applicants; conducts neighborhood meetings; makes staff presentations to the Planning Commission, the Design Review and Cultural Heritage Boards; and attends City Council meetings to answer questions about their assigned projects.

The Planning & Economic Development Department provides a wide range of development services to this dynamic and growing community, developing long-range plans for the growth of Santa Rosa and reviewing development proposals for consistency with those plans. These are very busy, challenging, yet rewarding times for the Department due to dramatic increase in activity as a result of the unprecedented October 2017 fire disaster in which several businesses and 5% of the City’s housing stock were destroyed. In addition, the City Council approved a comprehensive cannabis ordinance and program in December 2017. Planning staff assist in the development of the cannabis land use permit program, the public review process, preparing reports and presentations, conducting outreach and education, and processing major cannabis permit applications.

There is currently one opening in Development review. The eligible list of candidates resulting from this recruitment may also be used to fill future City Planner vacancies.
