City of Sunnyvale – Chief Building Official

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Chief Building Official to oversee the dynamic Building Safety division operations in the Community Development Department (CDD). The Chief Building Official works closely with the Director of CDD, Assistant Director of CDD (Planning) and Housing Officer as part of the CDD senior management team and maintains collaborative relationships with numerous other departments and divisions.

The Chief Building Official provides positive leadership, strong management and administrative expertise for the Building Safety division. Strong technical, problem solving and communication skills are a must. The desire is to support the long-standing environment that emphasizes service through effective utilization of operational systems, processes, and technology, leading to quicker turnaround and greater levels of communication to the customer. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills including a participatory, visible and “hands-on” management style. Consistent with the focus on service is the timely processing of permits and development plans and inspections made more challenging by a strong economic environment with unprecedented levels of development activity. The position will engage staff (approximately 20 regular and casual employees) and manage workload through mentorship, training and innovative approaches to service delivery.

Key work items for the next two years include: 1) the implementation of a permit tracking system that integrates building, planning, fire prevention, engineering, housing and code enforcement activities; 2) adoption and implementation of the 2019 California Building Codes and review and adoption of Reach Codes supporting the Climate Action Plan; 3) managing staffing and training during the eighth straight year of record breaking development activity including a large pipeline of residential, office/commercial and hotel projects; and 4) participating in citywide initiatives and projects with bold sustainable innovation.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in structural engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, plan review or a related field and five years of advanced journey level construction inspection or professional engineering experience, including two years of supervisory experience. Possession and maintenance of certification as a Plans Examiner and as a Certified Building Official by the International Code Council (ICC).
