Why Advertise with Us

American Planning Association California Northern Section (“APA California – Northern” or “Section”) offers a wide range of programming each year. The Section hosts regular social networking events and professional development programming as well as two annual Signature Events: the Holiday Party and Awards Gala. Many of our professional development events offer additional value to accredited planners by including AICP credits. 

In addition to a broad range of traditional planning-focused audiences, topics and events, the Northern Section offers a diverse range of events, including new and emerging areas of practice and areas of intersection with planning, including programming relating to health, technology, design, film, and environmental justice. The Section holds events at traditional locations and also at interesting and unique event locations and formats, including tech campuses, museums, and walking tours.

Regular Events

Single Event

  • $250 per event and/or by providing services, goods, or donations of equal or more value.
  • Sponsor may receive: (A) verbal recognition at the event; (B) visible brand placement at the event; (C) name of firm added to promotional materials; and (D) two tickets. 
  • Examples include mixers, planner meetups, happy hours, walking tours and other informal events organized by Regional Activity Coordinators (RAC’s), Emerging Planners Group, Mid-Career Planning Group, and other networking events. 

Event Series

  • $500 per event series and/or by providing services, goods, or donations of equal or more value. 
  • Sponsor may receive: (A) verbal recognition at events; (B) visible brand placement at the events; (C) name of firm added to promotional materials; and (D) four tickets. 
  • Examples include brown bag series, ethics workshops, professional development and other programmed events, including webinars and other topic-focused events, many of which include an offering of AICP credits.

Signature Events

Holiday Party 

The annual Section Holiday Party is typically held the Friday before Thanksgiving. The Holiday Party generally attracts between 100 and 150 attendees. The format typically includes a cocktail party, fundraising activities for the California Planning Foundation (CPF) scholarships, and recognition of sponsors and their accomplishments through presentations, posters, and silent auction items. Recent event locations include SPUR Oakland, La Pena Cultural Center, and the Oakland Museum of California. 

Sponsorship options for the Holiday Party include the following

Platinum Sponsor:

  • Verbal recognition at the event;
  • Firm recognition on eNews prior to and following the event;
  • Name of firm added to promotional materials;
  • Visible brand placement at the event;
  • 4 tickets to the event; and
  • 6 raffle tickets;

Sponsorship cost: $600

What it pays for:

  • Sponsorship toward event costs, including entertainment; and/or
  • Contribution toward raffle prizes.

Gold Sponsor:

What you get:

  • Verbal recognition at the event;
  • Visible brand placement at the event;
  • Name of firm added to promotional materials;
  • 2 tickets to the event; and
  • 4 raffle tickets.

Alternative ways to contribute: please help by donating items for the raffle, such as gift baskets, gift certificates, artwork, or anything that planners may enjoy.

Awards Gala 

The annual Awards Gala is generally held in June each year. The Gala attracts between 100 and 150 attendees and awardees. Our Awards Gala encourages professional development and increases the public’s awareness of the planning profession by recognizing outstanding achievements in the planning field. During the Gala, the Section honors innovative plans and projects, distinguished APA members, and contributors to planning and achievements of the Section. The format typically includes a cocktail reception with an award presentation, where all awardees are acknowledged with a video presentation outlining their projects followed by the presentation of an award for their achievements. It’s a great opportunity to meet and greet the best planners of Northern California.

Advertising Venues

Newsletter

The Northern News is a widely read newsletter covering topics relevant to the planning profession throughout the Northern Section. The newsletter is published as ten issues annually, with eight single-month issues and two double-month issues. The newsletter is a great way to reach approximately 5,000 readers per issue.

Website

The recently redesigned website is a great resource for section materials including the current newsletter and back issues, Bay Area consultants and jobs, the section awards program, and section events. The website has several thousand visits per month.

eNews

The eNews is a bimonthly email distributed to Northern Section members that provides calendar events and alerts members that the newsletter has been published. With a distribution of over 2,500 recipients, the eNews is a highly visible way to advertise in a timely manner.

Awards Gala

The Northern Section hosts an Awards Program to encourage quality in planning and increase the public’s awareness of the planning profession through recognizing outstanding achievement in the planning field. Each year, the Northern Section bestows Planning Awards to honor the most outstanding efforts in planning in the Section. The program honors innovative plans and projects, distinguished APA members, and lay contributors to planning and achievements of the Northern Section. Often, our Section winners ascend to win awards at the State and National levels!

Holiday Party

Every December, approximately 300 planners, elected officials, and design professionals gather to network, catch up, and raise funds for the California Planning Foundation (CPF). By sponsoring the holiday party, you will be recognized for your support of this nonprofit, charitable corporation established to further the professional practice of planning in California.
