Celebrate outstanding planning achievements

The APA California — Northern Awards Program was introduced to reward outstanding achievements in the field of planning. The program celebrates exceptional planning efforts and initiatives that make significant contributions to the community and the profession. It has helped raise the profile of the planning profession by showcasing exemplary planning efforts that can serve as models for other communities. Innovative planning projects, policies, and individuals within each section’s jurisdiction are recognized at the APA California — Northern annual Awards Gala. These events serve as a platform for professionals to share best practices, network, and celebrate achievements in planning.

The 22 award categories of Northern’s program align with the 18 APA California Award categories, providing eligible winners the opportunity to compete at the Chapter level. Each year, APA California sections invite distinguished members to volunteer for the Section Awards Jury through a Call for Jury action. Jurors play a crucial role in the APA California Awards Program by reviewing and evaluating some of the best planning work in the state. This year’s jury comments include:
“Exemplary, coordinated, highly innovative, and inclusive approach to cutting red tape in service of strategic planning goals. [This project] did a good job coordinating multidisciplinary efforts to solve pressing problems.” “Not flashy. Might have the most impact.”
“Exemplary plan and process for major growth increment; holistic thinking about streets, economic development. The plan says, ‘We matter. Our people need this.’ It’s nice to see interest from private developers and improvements on key roadways as a result of the plan.
“[This project was coordinated by a] small but mighty department who cares focused on the ‘right topics’ for the Bay Area.”
“Original and transferable grassroots approach necessary for [reaching] underrepresented audiences. Inclusive, innovative outreach paved the way for smooth and early adoption. Getting human stories out [should be considered] a best practice.”
