Monterey hosted California’s first theater, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press, and newspaper.
Monterey has been home to multiple celebrated artists and authors; most notably to Robert Louis Stevenson and John Steinbeck. Monterey is known for Cannery Row, an eclectic collection of shops and restaurants; the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium; Fisherman’s Wharf; whale watching; and all kinds of aquatic activities.
